In drafting a 2024 party platform, the Republican National Committee is officially backing Bitcoin and promising to halt what they characterise as an ‘unconstitutional jihad’ from Democrats against the cryptocurrency ‘industry’. The draft, which will be voted on in full on Tuesday, says that the GOP will ‘oppose a Central Bank Digital Currency that is not based on the blockchain’ or ‘growth’ and that it will ‘defend individual rights to mine Bitcoin, manage digital assets, and transact without government interference or monitoring’. This stands in stark contrast to the Biden administration, which has begun to take a much harder line on the emerging sector.
Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), the chair of the platform committee, celebrated the platform’s draft passage, which she said reflected the ‘vision and values of Donald Trump, who last week announced he would be a “crypto president”’. This was part of a ‘whole new crypto-friendly ecosystem’ adopted by Trump and the Republican Party, observes Prasad. For example, the chief executive officer of PayPal recently donated $5 million in Bitcoin to Trump’s re-election campaign, sending ‘a message that they don’t like the government, but they have Twitter accounts, too, and they are coming for us now’.
