Cryptocurrency scam ads featuring the image of the mining magnate Andrew Forrest in Australia reportedly cost Australians tens of millions of dollars. Forrest, who has been vocal about what he sees as an abdication of local responsibility, sued the parent company of Facebook (now Meta) in California over the use of his image in the ads.
His case speaks to some larger questions about responsibility in the digital advertising ecosystem and the impunity with which misleading ads can travel the world and hide behind legal jurisdictional boundaries. Targeting Meta in California was not an arbitrary move for Forrest. He’s trying to shed light on the need for stronger regulation of how companies control advertising content that can cause financial harm.
